![]() ![]() It’s a process of making my own disastrous mistakes and learning from them. Because for me, writing isn’t about reading advice on what has worked for others. I’m just going to walk you through a blunder I made once (almost twice) and see what we get out of it. I’m not one of those authors, and this isn’t one of those posts. ![]() To illustrate this, we’re going to look at the mistakes I’ve made with magic systems and what I’ve learned from them.īefore we start, a disclaimer: some authors give lovely, succinct guidelines on how to write better and read more informedly. But I’ve also learned that uncritically borrowing one’s favorite tropes can cause problems further on in the writing process. I’m a huge fan of the “Rule of Cool,” in both the fiction I write and the fiction I consume. Magic is so ubiquitous in fantasy that it’s easy for an author to throw it into a story without thinking hard about what she wants to do with it-or perhaps not thinking past “this would be cool.” To keep up to date on all Wang’s news, please check out her website: There’s also another serial available free through her newsletter, and there will be more Altima books coming out in 2022. ![]() ![]() This new land didn't have food falling from the sky, but the people learned to adapt. With no other choice left, everyone built boats made of bread and sailed to find a new place to live. The food wrecked the town to the point where the sanitation department gave up. One day it got even worse, and oversized foods began to fall in large qualities from the sky. Too much of certain food and bad combinations kept falling for no apparent reason. Some days nothing but smelly Gorgonzola cheese fell from the skies while other days nothing but overcooked broccoli came instead. ![]() ![]() One day, however, the weather started acting up. No person or animal was ever hungry in Chewandswallow. ![]() Food, completely cooked, came from the heavens three times a day in vast amounts. There was no reason for such stores as all the food everyone needed came raining from the sky each day. Chewandswallow was like many towns out there, except for the fact it had no food stores. That night the grandfather tells his grandkids the best bedtime story he knows of.įar, far away and across several oceans there once was a small town of about 300 called Chewandswallow. The family laughs it off and the rest of the day goes as expected. When the dog runs past the grandfather, he accidentally causes a pancake to fly through the air and hit his grandson Henry in the face. The girl's grandfather makes the pancakes. The story begins with a young girl describing a Saturday morning at her home. ![]() My mom has read it - by herself and then aloud to me and Vi, showing us the illustrations like a librarian at story time, lol. When we discovered he is a member of the Seminole Nation, Mekusukey band and African American, that was something else altogether.Īshleigh, 13: I keep reading this book, over and over. But when we first heard about FRY BREAD and Kevin Noble Maillard, that was something else. Some Indigenous authors are distant cousins–like Cynthia Leitich Smith, who is a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, and recognized this by including a Seminole character in RAIN IS NOT MY INDIAN NAME. ![]() ![]() Of course, we feel kinship with all Native books meant to lift us up, and give others authentic representation of every nation and culture. There is no doubt about it–Native children’s literature and YA literature, fiction and nonfiction, is having a moment. Our host at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Jim Logan, set the stage for our discussion by sharing some history of the chapel, including the magnificent stained glass windows depicting scenes from the Legend as well as representations of the author himself, Washington Irving. Under the auspices of the Warner Library and the Historical Society Serving Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, various venues in the villages are hosting “Everybody’s Reading The Legend” book clubs in celebration of the Bicentennial of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. This past Saturday I ventured forth from the Old Dutch Church and Burying Ground to our neighbor, just to the north, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, for a pop-up book club evening held in the Washington Irving Memorial Chapel. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mitchell’s use of fantasy in the interests of psychological realism has continued to infuriate some reviewers while receiving enthusiastic applause from others. Similarly the two villains of the piece, Norah and Jonah Grayer, twin sister and brother born in 1899, prolong their mortal existence, as do the Anchorites in The Bone Clocks, by forcibly decanting the souls of the living. For instance Marinus, the principal opponent of the forces of greed and murder, is a reincarnation of the same character (in his 32nd incarnation) in The Bone Clocks and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet (2010). The psychic forces facing off are the same or similar. ![]() So it doesn’t have to establish a new fictional universe. You could in fact call it a spin-off from The Bone Clocks. ![]() Mind you, Slade House is just over a third the length of its predecessor and is a distillation of its themes and universe. WE’RE IN LUCK! David Mitchell, who has taken four years to bring out each of his last two novels, has published a new one barely a year after the previous book, The Bone Clocks (2014). ![]() |
